The Senate has urged the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to collaborate with telecommunications companies and re-evaluate the recent increase in data prices.

Lawmakers emphasized the importance of ensuring that internet services remain affordable for Nigerians. This resolution followed a motion presented by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC-Cross River) during Wednesday’s plenary session.

The motion, titled “Urgent Need to Address the Increased Cost of Data Services in Nigeria,” highlighted that data prices had risen by up to 200 percent, placing a financial strain on many citizens, particularly young people who rely on the internet for work.

Senator Ekpenyong pointed out that many Nigerian youths earn a living through digital platforms, engaging in freelancing, remote work, digital marketing, and social media management. He further noted that fiber-optic internet services remain out of reach for most young people, making them dependent on mobile data, which has now become significantly more expensive.

He warned that the sharp rise in data costs could affect their economic stability and limit access to vital online resources.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio backed the motion, stating that ensuring affordable data services would support young entrepreneurs, helping them sustain their businesses while also boosting overall economic activity.

Beyond urging a price review, the Senate also called on the ministry to create a policy framework that promotes affordable internet access nationwide.

Lawmakers stressed the need for the federal government to establish and support tech hubs that would provide free or subsidized internet access to young entrepreneurs, students, and innovators.

Additionally, the Senate directed its Committee on Communications to investigate the reasons behind the high cost of data and propose solutions for a more sustainable and business-friendly telecommunications sector.
